距今二十年前，以采矿业为主的诺瓦斯科提亚小镇发生一起严重的瓦斯爆炸事故，在矿洞中的工人几乎悉数丧生。事故是由于负责人离开岗位参加情人节舞会，以至于无人监管所引起的。一年后，惨剧中的唯一生还者哈里•沃登对矿上的负责人大开杀戒，他随后被强制送往精神病院。但在离开时哈里留下诅咒，小镇从此不可再举行情人节舞会。
