故事背景是以1950年共和国成立之初，解放战争的硝烟尚未散尽，我军某大军区高层突然接到紧急命令，在该军区内立即挑选一批身经百战、身怀绝技的战斗英雄，组建一支执行绝密任务的特殊小分队。任务是秘密潜入情况复杂的广西梧州、以及西江一带，接应国民党投诚的一位情报高官，并不惜一切代价，将他所携带的，关系到新中国党和国家安危的绝密文件，秘密护送回北京。
《女婿难当》讲述的是任家一家老小的故事，任大伟和女婿曾自强，处身在一个丈母娘强势的家 庭之中。老少两代女婿，不但要应付种种家庭危机，还要费劲心思和强势的丈母娘斗法，和任性的小姨子斗法。尤其是围绕着怀孕、买房等问题时，女婿花招百出，丈母娘也是费尽心机。剧集虽然讲述的是家长里短的故事，但是也折射出许多社会的现实来。

该片主要讲述的是1942年，江南新四军与旧、日伪进行着残酷的战斗，国民党军队环伺左右。国民党将军郝俊杰预料到数年后国共必有一战，便策划实施了借用一支向新四军投诚的汪伪部队，从内部一举打垮江南新四军的“金太阳计划”。即设法指使汪伪部队的独立团投诚新四军，再利用潜伏的卧底挑起内战，并最终利用日本人的力量一举消灭新四军。
