本剧制片人是大名鼎鼎的迈克尔·贝。故事根据同名畅销小说改编，主人公是美军驱逐舰内森·詹姆斯号。当一场全球性的大灾难（注：在原著中这场灾难指的是美国和前苏联之间的全面核战争）抹去地球上绝大多数人口后，这艘战舰因为所处的位置特殊而逃过一劫。现在船上的人不得不面对一个新的现实——他们可能是这个世界上为数不多的幸存者之一，他们在这个世界上的位置和以前已经完全不一样。
