本剧根据巴金的同名小说改编。高老太爷是高家这个封建大家庭的统治者。觉新、觉民、觉慧是这个大家庭中的三兄弟，觉新是长子长孙，早熟而性格软弱，他与表妹梅芬相爱，却接受了父母的安排另娶瑞珏，但他却忘不了已成了寡妇的梅芬，而梅芬却在忧郁中死去。觉民与觉慧在外参加新文化运动和学生运动，遭到爷爷训斥，被软禁家中。觉民与表妹琴相爱，但爷爷却为他定下亲事，觉民为此离家躲避；觉慧是三兄弟中最叛逆的一个，他对家中丫头鸣凤有好感，但鸣凤将被爷爷嫁给自己朋友做妾，鸣凤在绝望中投湖自尽，觉慧决心脱离家庭。觉新妻子瑞珏的死让觉新有所醒悟，思想开始发生了变化，他支持觉慧离家出走。该剧通过对几个年轻人悲剧命运，体现了进步青年对新社会的向往，表现了封建大家庭的腐朽及其必然没落的命运。
