该剧根据梁晓声的同名小说改编，以居住在北方某省会城市的一户周姓人家三代人的视角，描绘了十几位平民子弟在近50年时间内所经历的跌宕起伏的人生，全面展示了改革开放以来中国所经历的翻天覆地的社会巨变，歌颂了中国人民拼搏向上、艰苦奋斗的伟大历程，以及勤劳正直、自尊自强的美好内心。
