明朝天启年间，山西济县黄庄镇张氏本器铺的少爷张少古生性顽皮，除了念书，其他方面不乏天资，但是他迷上了变戏法。张少古陪刘文才进京赶考，误打误撞讨得魏好贤欢心，跟张少古约定若真中三甲，定给他惊喜。两位主考官为了讨好魏好贤偷偷把张少古和刘文才的考卷调换。歪打正着，张少古被两个昏官以刘文才的身份带进宫去。临走，张少古劝刘文才尽快离开是非之地回家去。经过一番曲折，张少古被皇上钦点为状元，刘文才为第二。随即张少古和刘文才进行殿试，张少古深得皇上欢心。随后又进行了打擂，斗法等环节，张少古均胜出。后来皇上得知张少古假状元之事大怒，要斩首张少古，后被魏好贤求情给救下。皇上让张少古办最后一件事，然后就放他回。
