《起鼓．出狮》全剧共5集，剧本由真人真事改编，是公视首部4K超高画质规格制作的迷你剧集。故事以『扬广醒狮团』第二代张鸿的视角，描写从狮团成立、醒狮文化在台兴盛、开枝散叶，再到老一辈凋零，狮团衰落的故事，时代横跨民国50年代至今。民国50年，蓝宝粤菜酒楼的大厨梁广、二厨菜刀师与杨兴贵，在同乡会里成立了『扬广醒狮团』，三人都是民国38年随国民政府从广东撤退到台湾的老兵，从军前是家乡国术馆的同门师兄弟，当年在梁广的号召下，村里好些青少年就这么跟着梁广从军报国，没想到一来台湾就是一辈子。梁广退伍后，和一些当大厨的同乡共组同乡会，一路照顾陆续退伍的同乡们，同乡会在当时成了大家暂时的避风港和栖身之所。张鸿的父亲是粤菜名师，张鸿从小就对醒狮的一切充满热情，对于声名远播的梁师父与『扬广醒狮团』更是充满向往。梁老师父中风后，仅能以口传教授醒狮的一切，自小被笑称「狮迷」的张鸿，对醒狮的一切都求知若渴，而梁师父本身就是一本有关醒狮的活字典，因此张鸿入门后终日跟在师父身边跟师，成为梁师父晚年最得意的门生。梁师父年届退休时，跳过团里其他资辈皆高的师兄们，指定由张鸿出任总教练，此举埋下了日后众师兄们对张鸿暗里不满不服的种子，也导致张鸿被众人排挤，只能自行创团，而未能遵师意接手狮团的主因…。一间小小的同乡会，一群相互扶持的同乡战友，回顾整个狮团的兴衰史，也带我们重回了50年代外省老兵思乡的悲哀，以及70年代台湾经济起飞的奇迹。『扬广醒狮团』记录了人与人之间的情义，代与代之间所面临不同的人生境况和考验，也许有一天，『扬广』两个字将不复为人所记忆，但曾经当鼓声扬起，狮队出狮，雄狮采青众人喝采的那一刻，都是皮鼓旁狮袍下，所有「狮兄弟」们各自滋味的人生篇章里，同时晶光灿烂的时分。《起鼓．出狮》故事原型人物即是本剧舞狮指导的鸿胜醒狮团团长张远荣，该团在2009年国际听障奥运担任闭幕式表演团体。今年62岁的张远荣，舞动了半世纪，是集北少林拳、蔡李佛拳于一身的台湾醒狮界好手。本剧以他出版《起鼓．出狮》一书命名，有致敬及传承醒狮文化的意味。

Gun和Saen是Akanee教授的得意门生，他们都得到了教授的护身符（短棍）。教授赐予Saen狮爪尖峰，赐予Gun虎牙尖峰。他告诉两人他们有权利来权利控制尖峰，可以所向披靡，除非他们自相残杀。曾经Gun和Anchan是恋人，而Dokmai暗恋着Gun，但Dokmai却不知道Saen暗恋着自己。Gun的父亲却不希望儿子和Saen混在一起。于是Gun的父亲告诉如果他通过警察考试，就让他和Dokmai订婚，这让Gun和Anchan很伤心。Gun通过了警察考试，但在执勤过程中与歹徒产生冲突，使Saen的父亲被抢击中，Gun无奈坐牢，这也使Saen对Gun产生了巨大的仇恨。待Gun出狱，Saen的父亲被Gun枪杀，母亲和妹妹也被Saen抓走。他开始了寻妻（前女友）、寻仇和探索真相的开始。。。
