Both these attacks and SYN flooding target the victim's TCP application and can interrupt the victim's service at much less cost than brute force flooding packet methods. However, SYN flooding is very different from other TCP spoofing attacks. SYN flooding attacks the services of the new connection without affecting the established connection, while other spoofing attacks break the established connection and cannot block the new connection from the beginning. SYN attacks can be stopped only by modifying the initial handshake program, while other spoofing attacks require checking every piece of data throughout the connection life cycle.
