《美丽新天地》讲述的是香港人来上海创业奋斗的故事。已经成功摆脱花瓶形象的范冰冰在剧中扮演性格复杂的上海女子程琳，与张智霖、杨恭如、邓健泓及高云翔共同演绎了一段微妙暧昧而又曲折动人的“五角恋”。
该剧原本将故事地点定为奥罗拉市（Aurora），但为了避免刺激2012年奥罗拉市电影院枪击事件受害者的家属，制片方临时改变了故事地点。该剧由《谋杀》（The Killing）编剧Aaron Zelman撰写，故事根据一个小说家的处女作改编。虽然小说要9月才会出版，但颇具诱惑力的故事情节促使多家制片公司参与改编权竞标大战。
本片为《锦衣之下》系列电影的第一部，改编自同名IP，故事主要讲述了：陆绎和张承德都是锦衣校尉，在探查将军李汉暗通敌军的案件时，张承德竟得知养父即杀父仇人，引发养父子三人的恩仇对决；而后兄弟二人在所有真相大白后，却最终站到你死我活的决斗场。通过细致展现锦衣卫兄弟面对复杂身世的痛苦挣扎和恩仇两难，深情赞扬了兄弟二人浴血杀敌的英勇豪情，及生死对决时甘为对方牺牲的手足情深，表达了邪不压正、正义必胜的正能量。
